Wehrmacht Troops Entertainment Receivers

  • WR 1 (WR 1/P) - Wehrmacht troops entertainment broadcast receiver. Frequency bands: LW (150…425 kHz), MW (517…1540 kHz) and SW (5.9…15.5 MHz). Manufactured by Blaupunkt from late 1941 as a replacement for WR 1/T.

The WR 1 broadcast receiver was designed by Blaupunkt in 1940. It was a high-quality rugged 6-tube superhet capable of indoor and field operations. Letters "WR" stand for Wehrmacht-Rundfunkempfänger.

Using at first Telefunken metal tubes of so-called "11th Series" (DCH 11, DF 11, etc.) made by Telefunken, the WR 1 was redesigned in 1941 for the new glass tubes of "25th Series" (DC 25, DF 25, etc.) with loctal base made by Philips.

Because on the outside both old and new models of WR 1 receivers looked exactly the same yet requiring different spare parts (spare tubes, etc.), Blaupunkt had to mark the WR 1's in a special way. The receivers of the old model were marked by big letter "T" at the top left corner of their front panels while receivers of the new model were marked by big letter "P".

Please note that all the WR 1 receivers of Blaupunkt manufacture thru all the production period (1940-1943) had just "WR 1" symbols on their factory labels. There are three different versions of WR 1 factory labels known to us which differ in the way of indicating the Manufacturer's only.

It is important to understand that abbreviations "WR 1/T" for the old model and "WR 1/P" for the new model of WR 1 by Blaupunkt were used by Wehrmacht in documentation only (!!). Apparently it was a combination of "WR 1" symbols from Blaupunkt factory labels and big letters "T" or "P" from the receiver front panels.

Vacuum tubes used in WR 1/P receivers were Philips glass tubes DCH 25, DF 25 (2 pcs), DAC 25, DC 25 and DDD 25. There was the 7th tube in WR 1/P, a DF 26, which served as microphone amplifier and provided for use of an external record player.

While standard WR 1/P broadcast receivers covered LW (150…425 kHz), MW (517…1540 kHz) and SW (5.9…15.5 MHz), on special order it was possible to convert the WR 1/P into a Short Wave communications receiver covering 1.5...21.7 MHz in three frequency segments - 1.5...4.6 MHz, 4.6...10.5 MHz and 10.5...21.7 MHz. Special tank circuits and scale would be factory installed in WR 1/P for such special order.

The WR 1/P could be powered from AC or DC networks of 90V to 250V or from 90V dry battery and either dry or storage battery for filament. Two ENL dry cells could be used or a choice of storage batteries including 2 В 38, 2,4 NC 28, 2,4 NC 58 or 4,8 NC 10. Car batteries of 6VDC or 12VDC could also be used with WR 1/P receiver.

WHD = 395 х 485 х 283 mm. Weight with dry batteries - 32 kg, weight without batteries - 26 kg.
